Abstract: The lithium oxygen batteries (LOBs) have attracted worldwide attention due to their high theoretical energy density comparable to gasoline. If successfully developed, it could play a significant role in the electrification of transport (EV) and the development of large-scale energy storage systems (ESSs). However, limitations that accompany present LOBs such as low round trip efficiency, large charge overpotential and cyclic degradation, hinders their large-scale commercialization as next- generation batteries. One of the major contribution to these limitations is the sluggish ORR/OER kinetics which in turn results to large overpotential during discharge and especially charge. Thus, the author would like to propose the use of Nickel carbide (Ni3C) as an active cathode catalyst and provide evidence that it could effectively lower the overpotential during charging; thus, enhancing the overall electrochemical performance of LOBs.
