Title: Analysis of near cortex versus both cortex screw fixation in bone fracture surgery - a finite element study

Abstract: A fall or accident is most common cause of fracture. Current treatment involves putting back the broken pieces to the original position with plate and screws. Standard Locking Compression Plates (LCPs) are commonly used to stabilize a fracture and hold the bones in position. The project objective is to analyse the behaviour of near cortex versus both cortex screw fixation in bone fracture surgery using finite element analysis (FEA). FEA of the LCP-bone construct was modelled and simulated. The FEA were carried out on three-point bending of the plate, and axial loading and four-point bending of the plate-bone construct. FE simulations values were compared with experimental results. The model was further analysed for non-linear behaviour with linearly elastic-perfectly plastic stress/strain relationship for the plate. The FE analysis on 9-hole LCP model was validated with its experimental result and its stiffness deviated at less than 5%. In axial loading, the stiffness of the FE analysis was close to the actual plate-bone experiment.
