Abstract: In the first 40 years of the People's Republic of China, the news media were viewed as the mouthpiece of the Communist Party and its government. Therefore, they were expected to toe the party line and were used as a political tool by the ruling class. There was no mentioning of the commercial role of news media in the pre-reform era.
