Since the introduction of the Speak Mandarin Campaign in 1979 to unify local Chinese with one single language, dialect programming on free-to-air TV has been wiped out. However, an info-educational drama series “Eat Already?”, said to be the first Chinese dialect series since 1979, was premiered in 2016 with aim to better communicate Government policies and information to seniors in a vernacular they are familiar with. With Singapore being a multi-racial and multi-language society, it is important for the subtitles to bridge a dialect film’s multiple semiotic mode, in order to bring the messages across and allow audiences to appreciate the film. This paper studies the translation strategies used in the subtitling of dialect film “Eat Already?” , and will further discuss on the future of dialect films in Singapore.
