Having a long history as a film genre, wuxia or martial arts films is now a film genre that defines China in the global cinema market. With globalisation and production funding from all around the world, there are two classic transnational wuxia films that still holds the Hollywood box office record to date. Directed by Ang Lee, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) still holds the top box office record for foreign films today, followed by Zhang Yimou’s Hero (2002) in second. Aside from the commercial success of these two films, the artistry shown in both films are also highly acknowledged by scholars. The films rewrote and improvised the wuxia film genre, by introduced new narrative ways, character development, ideologies and more, that were unlike those shown in traditional wuxia films.
