Diabetes mellitus : a preliminary study on the lifestyles of Malays and Indians diabetics

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus has affected Singaporeans at an alarming rate in recent times, particularly Singaporean minorities. The emphasis in Singaporean society today has been on leading an active lifestyle and adopting a healthier diet. This research aims to highlight the ethniccultural factor that affect minorities’ food lifestyles. Subsequently, it will reveal the difficulties diabetics face in adopting a healthier food lifestyle. The findings in this research will also reveal the social complexity behind the medical condition of Diabetes Mellitus and will help expand the scope of understanding a medical condition from a sociological standpoint.
