Abstract: The current review provides a critical synthesis of the school-work-life (SWL) interface literature focusing on full-time university undergraduates who engage in term-time employment. This targeted population is of interest as working undergraduates are an understudied group that potentially face the additional challenge of juggling school role demands, in addition to work and life role demands. We examined the different variables of antecedents, outcomes, mediators, and moderators involved with interrole conflict and facilitation. Most of the available SWL interface research is built upon the existing work-life literature, through employing similar theoretical perspectives in accounting for interrole facilitation and conflict (e.g., resource scarcity hypothesis, conservation of resources theory). Our review revealed that majority of SWL interface studies had investigated work-school conflict and facilitation, whereas research on interrole interactions involving other roles (i.e., life-school interface, work-life interface) is relatively sparse. Limitations of the current SWL interface literature and suggestions for future are also discussed.
