Abstract: “Rhythm” mainly features Burmese traditional art and designs alongside cultural musical performance. By integrating the traditional and modern elements, the story is told through visual metaphors. In the story, the female protagonist goes through a series of struggles which is interpreted as a culture shock or a change in her life. The project explores the integration of 2D and motion graphics animation that responded rhythmically to the beats of the music. The project showcases the traditional art of the home country, Burma, through the use of animation. It also aims to shine a modern light and view of the art style in Burma. Fields explored in the project include visual motifs that are iconic in many Burmese patterns and designs, wall carvings, sacred paintings, fabric design and traditional musical instruments. Those motifs, symbols, and patterns are visualised and re-designed as visual metaphors to support the storyline. The patterns are also used as backgrounds for the whole film.
