Abstract: The Third Space Network (3SN) is a video streaming media project created by Associate Professor Randall Packer in conjunction with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the School of Art, Design and Media (ADM). The 3SN project is an internet broadcast channel [1] that disseminates live broadcast events and programs through Web-based video streaming, including broadcasted interviews, conferences and live Internet art created by media artists from around the world. This final year project (FYP) was focused on building a streaming server platform to provide functionality required for the Third Space Network, as well as documentation of the ongoing use of video streaming technology in the School of Art, Design and Media. The streaming platform is powered primarily by the Wowza Streaming Engine, customizable streaming software that transcodes, schedules, and broadcasts live video streams. The Wowza Streaming Engine has been customized specifically for the Third Space Network and ADM using Java, XML and SMIL technology. In this project, the Wowza platform has been used to test and broadcast various types of live streams, viewable on a WordPress website as well as social media platforms including Facebook and YouTube. This project is a result of my IEM studies, a collaborative, interdisciplinary program that joins the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), School of Communications, and the School of Art, Design and Media. In this report there can be found detailed documentation into the use and deployment of the Wowza Streaming Engine Platform for a variety of streaming media applications, adding a rich broadcasting resource for ADM and NTU.
