Abstract: The formation of a layer of bacterial biofilm on catheter surfaces have been shown to be the main cause of various acute infection in patients. By preventing the formation of biofilm on the catheter surface has been shown to reduce the chances of infection that occur in patients. One of the ways to prevent the formation of biofilm is by modifying the surface properties of the catheter to confer an antifouling effect. An optimized antifouling effect on the catheter surface would prevent nonspecific bacteria adhesion thus inhibiting the first stage of biofilm development. In this study, zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) polymers was investigated and an antifouling coating made from SBMA was optimized to develop a good anti-biofilm catheter coating.
