Wu Li (1632-1718) is one of the leading orthodox painters of the late Ming and early. He is good in music, writing, calligraphy and especially painting. Wu Li studied Confucianism in his early years, learnt Buddha Zen in middle age, and adherence Catholicism in his later years. Due to his indifferent behaviour, he does not like to pursue fame and fortune so later generations often discuss his paintings, along with his noble characters. The Whiling Away the Summer was made in 1679. At the age of 47, it was three years ago before he joined Catholicism and was also the golden decade of his middle age. The painting is a landscape painting created by Wu Li on the theme of summer. From the different aspects, the painting shows the aesthetic taste of the protagonist's poetic summer and the fact that not only he can follow the old convention, but also display his own creativity. First of all, this article will start from the perspective of art history, combing the life of Wu Li and the motivation of Wu Li to create Whiling Away the Summer. Then, I will use the theory of Text and Image Studies created by Professor I Lo-fen to analyze the imagery with symbolic value in the painting. Lastly, I would analyze the characteristics of "the meaning in the painting" and "the meaning outside the painting" in Whiling Away the Summer, in order to reproduce the literary tradition and literati interest behind it, as well as to restore a highly artistic mind paradise under the integration of calligraphy and painting.
