Abstract: Lithium ion batteries are one of the most commonly used rechargeable batteries today. They are popular for their high energy density and are growing in popularity for military, aerospace, electric vehicle and renewable energy applications. The electrochemical characteristics of li-ion batteries varies with the type of material and chemistry used. The performance, safety and cost of each type of battery is different resulting in each type of battery being suitable for different types of application. This final year report will give the reader an overview of the chemistry in a lithium ion battery, how the battery can be mathematically modeled and solved with CFD software. A two-dimensional modelling is used to describe the physics of the battery and Ansys Fluent CFD software is applied to solve the model. Battery performance and thermal simulations are conducted and analyzed. Various battery cooling systems are explored and a conceptual design of a battery module with thermal management system is designed.
