Title: Dynamic runway threshold management at Changi airport for ships in strait channel as obstacles

Abstract: With constantly increasing demand of air traffic in Singapore Changi Airport, much effort has been made to maximize the runway capacity. However, there is no previous research in attempting to reduce the runway threshold of the runway. Therefore, the aim of this project is to develop a flight path obstruction analysis algorithm for Singapore Changi airport runway threshold reconfiguration. This research aims to reduce the runway threshold by modelling the flight approach path and obstacle surface profile of ship movements in the Singapore Strait. This is done by utilizing Python Programming language for the development of algorithms to determine the mean, standard deviation and the normal distribution of the height of the ship and the landing trajectory of the aircraft. Following which, a final algorithm which determines the collision risk between the ship and the aircraft can be developed. The final algorithm was applied to three shipping lanes in the Singapore Strait individually to obtain the collision risk with respect to the length of threshold shifted in each lane and the results were presented using scatter plot. A comparison of the results in each lane showed similar trends indicating that the collision risk increases as the length of the runway threshold shifted increases. Finally, after analyzing the collision risk data of the critical lane (Lane 1), it was concluded that the runway threshold of runway 20R can be reduced by 70m. However, there are several limitations in this project that can limit the accuracy of this results. Therefore, possible improvements to this project has also been suggested.
