Abstract: In recent years, air travel has been an increasingly popular and essential means of transportation. This resulted in the increase of air traffic, making conflict more likely to occur in the limited airspace available. To alleviate the situation, proposed future air traffic management systems aims to utilise additional computational power from individual aircrafts to better manage air traffic and improve the situation. To achieve this objective, it is necessary that better understanding of aircraft conflicts are available. Therefore, this project attempted to understand the current air traffic conditions and investigated nature of conflicts in the air. This was achieved by generating objects representing aircrafts and simulating occurrence of conflicts. The conflict data was recorded when the separation is lost. The recorded data was then analysed accordingly. From this project, it is concluded that higher number of aircraft will result in more than proportional increase of aircraft conflicts. No clear pattern emerged to conclude a location that conflict is more likely to occur, although starting the conflict in high risk areas results in higher risk of subsequent conflicts. In the future, established components like the Closest Point of Approach can be implemented in the algorithm to provide a better simulation of conflict scenarios. Variables such as uncertainty in wind, velocity and location data can also be integrated into the algorithm to allow investigation of their relation to likelihood of conflict occurrence.
