Abstract: This project aimed to design a clockwork escapement mechanism to operate and control the movement of the magnetic particles involved in magnetic digital microfluidic without the need of electrical energy. The regular periodic oscillation movement of the clockwork escapement mechanism transfer kinetic energy to regulate the permanent magnet to move in desired time intervals. This report mainly covers the author knowledges and experiences in designing the clockwork escapement mechanism. This includes the introduction of various types of clockwork escapement mechanism that exist today, the process involved to design and along with the calculations used for the selection. The detailed design drawing, challenges and limitations will also be discussed by the author in this report.
