Title: PC-based software for thermal design of shell-and-tube heat exchanger with fouling considerations

Abstract: The heat exchanger design process is complicated and often integrated between fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and heat transfer. Although there are many commercial software readily available to be used and to assist manufacturers as well as engineers in designing a heat exchanger, these software are often costly and require users to possess certain in-depth knowledge with regard to heat exchanger design. This often becomes a hindrance for engineering students and junior practising engineers as they are still in the transition from the theoretical understanding to the principles and practice of the real world. In this project, an accessible software is developed under the Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 platform and coded with C# language with the intention of closing the gap in the above-mentioned issues. This project makes use of the Bell Delaware method for computation of the shell-side performance of a heat exchanger. The program can perform both sizing and rating tasks and a database is featured in the software to store the properties of commonly used fluids. Currently, the software only covers shell-and-tube type heat exchangers. However, further expansion can be done on the software to incorporate other types of exchangers as well as additional functions.
