Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between audit committee chairperson characteristics and the level of credit risk in bank holding companies based on a sample of 347 large U.S. BHCs. We find that credit risk is positively related to the AC chairperson’s banking expertise, and negatively related to the AC chairperson’s tenure and number of outside directorships.
