Abstract: Self-enhancement is “the tendency to describe oneself more positively than a normative criterion would predict”. Research on the relationship between self-enhancement and work performance is predominantly accomplished in the Western context. The Asian region has witnessed limited published research in this field. Hence, the objective of this research study was to plug the gaps in self-enhancement and adjustment and job performance research in the region. A 4-page survey questionnaire was customized to suit the local Singaporean context and a total of 138 questionnaires were distributed to employees in Singapore and their respective supervisors. The results indicated there was a negative correlation between self-enhancement and job performance. Employees who are poorer performers tend to engage in self-enhancement efforts to create a positive image of themselves in the eyes of their supervisors. Implications and discussions for future research were discussed.
