Education and Pedagogy

Dr Wong Lung Hsiang is a Senior Education Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Universitas Negeri Malang, Indonesia. He earned his Ph.D. in 1998 from NTU, specialising in computer engineering with a focus on artificial intelligence in education, particularly intelligent tutoring systems based on the inquiry teaching model.

His current research interests include mobile and seamless learning, AI in education, computer-assisted language and science learning, computer-supported collaborative learning, and teachers' professional development. Leveraging his extensive experience in design-based research and school-based longitudinal intervention studies, he has established niches in seamless learning and computer-assisted language learning. Notably, he is a leading researcher in mobile seamless learning, having developed the influential "10 Dimensions of Mobile Seamless Learning" (10D-MSL) framework. This framework has been widely cited, including in the "Innovating Pedagogy 2012 Report" by the Open University, UK, and the "Handbook of the Learning Sciences (2nd Ed.)."

Dr. Wong also proposed the "artefact-oriented analysis" method, a scheme for analysing student interactions with their environments and peers to identify socio-cultural conditions that support or hinder seamless and situated learning.

He led several funded studies on seamless Chinese language learning models, such as "Move, Idioms!", "MyCLOUD", "LI-nterChange", and "e-SDCL." These models integrate mobile devices and social media to boost young students' motivation by leveraging contextual affordances in their daily lives, including parental involvement, to support autonomous learning and authentic language use. Notably, "MyCLOUD" was integrated into formal Chinese classes in five schools. His frameworks have influenced recent blended learning initiatives in secondary schools and junior colleges nationwide.

Dr. Wong has authored two pioneering books on mobile seamless learning: “Seamless Learning in the Age of Mobile Connectivity” (lead editor) and “Move, Language Learning! – Investigating Seamless and Mobile-Assisted Language Learning” (lead author). He has published over 50 SSCI/SCI-indexed journal articles, including recent work on AI in education and human-AI interaction. He has received numerous Best/Outstanding Paper Awards at conferences such as AI-ED'95, GCCCE'09, WMUTE'10, ICCE’11, mLearn'11 (two awards), GCCCE'13 (two awards), ICCE'15, and GCCCE'24. He received the prestigious APSCE Distinguished Researcher Award in 2015. He is currently a Managing Editor of the SSCI-indexed Asia-Pacific Journal on Education and a former Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies. He is recognised as a top-2% researcher worldwide according to an ongoing study by Stanford University.

In recent years, Dr. Wong has focused on human–AI co-creation and AI-mediated learning processes, developing the concept of Meta-Task Awareness (MTA) to explain how learners regulate their interaction with generative AI. His work examines how students engage with, evaluate, and transform ideas in collaboration with AI, contributing to emerging research on AI-supported learning and human–AI interaction in education. He has also conducted research on AI-supported language learning and AI-mediated pedagogical design, including collaborations with the Ministry of Education on the use of generative AI in mother tongue education.

Dr. Wong is active in various international academic organisations. He is a former president of the Asia-Pacific Society on Computers in Education (APSCE) (2018-2019), an Executive Committee member of the Global Chinese Society for Computers in Education, a former Board Member of the International Alliance of Advancing Learning in the Digital Era (IAALDE) (2019-2024), and former Singapore representative of Technical Committee 3 (e-Learning), International Federation on Information Processing, UNESCO.
